Factory floor conversion of a victorian cotton mill into artist studios and art gallery
Constructed 2010
May 2010–September 2010
Christoph Holz
The Plan of the 5th floor Awol Studios in Manchester offers an art gallery as well as 16 studios for artists and small start ups. The project was patially realised as a construction workshop for participants of the EASA 010 summerschool.
The visitor to the studios is welcomed by large revolving doors that open during events and form a large exhibition space between the gallery and corridor.
The enclosures recompose the strict structural rythm of the mill into an undulating diagonal space leading towards a window announcing the social space for residents at the end.
